Søndagskaffen, 12. mai: Den amerikanske morsdags-utgaven

    Ampol-kaffen

God ettermiddag!

sitatetElections are about independents and moderates.

I think a lot of the views that I have that are more inclusive of people who haven’t been voting Republican and the fact that we’re going to take the politicking to them – I think would indicate that we would have much broader appeal.

    Teaser:

Recent events suggest that the 44th president may not be immune to the phenomenon that historians call the “second-term curse.”

Not four months after his ambitious inaugural address, President Obama finds himself struggling to move his legislative agenda through an unbudging Congress.

And over the past week, two flaring controversies — one over his administration’s handling of the killing of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya, the other over Internal Revenue Service employees targeting tea party groups for special scrutiny — have dominated the discussion in Washington.

    Les videre.

Stu Rothenberg påpeker samtidig følgende poeng:

«The last five presidents elected to a second consecutive term – Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – all suffered through problems, ranging from economic and foreign policy to personal.

Obama may or may not join that group (not all of whom suffered a stinging defeat in his second-term election), but Democratic strategists have to hope that media’s focus returns to Republicans and their opposition to the president’s agenda.»

«In the past couple weeks, in interviews with House and Senate staffers for the Republican leadership, there has been a depressing message: Nothing is going to get done for the next four years. Again and again, the same mantra could be heard. Partisanship and election jockeying for 2014 and 2016 is going to keep everything locked up.

Watching the live feed from the White House on Friday it became hard to argue otherwise. President Obama held an event with mothers defending the Affordable Care Act, the start of a monthslong effort to protect his signature achievement, which Republicans have promised to fight all the way to the 2014 elections and beyond. Then, shortly thereafter, White House press secretary Jay Carney jumped between answering questions about the administration’s response to the attacks in Benghazi to the Internal Revenue Service targeting the Tea Party and other conservative political groups for audits.

It’s going to take some time to get to the bottom of these controversies, but we can conclude the pessimists are probably right. Nothing is going to get done in this siege environment.

… These twin controversies will spur more congressional hearings. That, in turn, means months more of disclosures, rabbit holes, and partisan attacks. For many liberals, this is the obvious point of the politically motivated Benghazi inquiries: to pin the president down and leave him ineffective. Perhaps it was always likely that something would blow the long-shot budget negotiations off course, but the continued effort by the president and a handful of Republican senators suggested at least a glimmer of opportunity. The light appears to have gone out.»

“And it’s not just our federal government that would get a copy,” skrev visepresidenten i NAGR Dudley Brown i en email til medlemmene av gruppen. “International bureaucrats at the United Nations and foreign governments would have access to the registry as well! You and I both know registration is the first step toward outright confiscation.”

    Dear fellow American,

If we’re going to defeat the UN Gun Ban, you and I have to turn the heat up now before it’s too late!

Please sign your Firearms Sovereignty Survey and put yourself squarely on the record AGAINST the UN Gun Ban.

    For Freedom, Rand Paul

Over the five days between the attacks and the now-infamous Sunday show appearance by U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice, senior officials from the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department argued over how much information to disclose about the assault in which four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, were killed.

That internal debate and the changes it produced in the Obama administration’s immediate account of the attack have revived Benghazi as a political issue in Washington six months after the presidential election in which it played a prominent role. Friday’s revelations — ABC News published 12 versions of the talking points — produced the latest round of Benghazi post-mortems in the eight months since the attacks. Senior administration officials said in a briefing for reporters that none of Obama’s political advisers were involved in discussions around the original talking points, only national security staff officials.

Sky-high approval ratings be damned — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is going on air next week with an ad that paints his Democratic rival Barbara Buono as a tax-hiker who is yoked to unpopular former governor Jon Corzine, POLITICO has learned.

The spot, which begins running Monday, is part of an $800,000 ad buy over the course of roughly a week, a source tracking the air wars in New Jersey told POLITICO. The source provided a script of the ad, which is an introductory spot about Buono, a long-serving state legislator who has been struggling mightily to gain traction in the race.

“Meet Barbara Buono, Jon Corzine’s budget chair and now running for governor,” the spot says. It adds, “Buono voted 154 times to raise our taxes.”

Obama: Obamacare har kommet for å bli

    httpv://youtu.be/TRklj75Vw4k

“Because of this law there are millions of other Americans – moms and dads and daughters and sons – who no longer have to hang their fortunes on chance. Because we are not going to inflict that hardship on the American people again,” sa Obama.

“The United States of America does not sentence its people to suffering just because they don’t make enough to buy insurance on the private market, just because their work doesn’t provide health insurance, just because they fall sick or suffer an accident.”

    Obamas Weekly Address
