«If Cruz knows how to check nearly all the right boxes for his audience, he lacks the conversational, just-between-us-friends style of Vice President Joe Biden. The Democratic Party’s premier spinner of campaign-trail yarns was performing across town Friday night at a fundraising dinner for South Carolina Democrats. …

Should Cruz announce for president early in the 2016 cycle, he would be almost exactly the same age Biden was when – as a 44-year-old senator midway through his third term – he kicked off his first bid for the White House in the summer of 1987.

And much as Biden likes to trumpet the values of the Democratic Party by telling voters about his own family’s resilience in the face of economic hardship, Cruz holds up his family’s immigrant story as proof of the power of American freedom.»
