Splittelse i Det republikanske partiet. Som vi skrev i gårsdagens Morgenkaffe, har Trump, i etterkant av at en rekke fremtrende republikanere har trukket sin støtte til han, gått hardt ut mot eget parti, inkludert speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin, 1.distrikt)
Det antas at Paul Ryans agenda er å sørge for at republikanerne ikke mister kontroll over Representantenes hus, samt å posisjonere sitt kandidatur for en eventuell presidentvalgkamp i 2020. Ryans posisjon som speaker kan imidlertid være i fare, da flere republikanere har ytret sin misnøye over hans manglende støtte til Trump. Jim Bridenstine (R-Oklahoma, 1.distrikt) tvitret på onsdag at, «Given the stakes of this election, if Paul Ryan isn’t for Trump, then I’m not for Paul Ryan». Under en opptreden hos Bill O’Reilly indikerte også Trump at Ryans rolle som speaker vil være i fare dersom han blir president.
En rekke Trump-surrogater oppfordrer imidlertid nå Trump til å avbryte angrepene på Ryan og fokusere på Clinton. En anonym kilde uttaler til Politico:
«It was people being like, ‘Donald Trump, the focus needs to be on why Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are different; not fighting between Donald Trump and Paul Ryan. The focus of our efforts need to be on the enemy, not self-inflicted fire.» Les mer her og her.
Trump med ytterligere kritikk av den republikanske partieliten. Under et folkemøte i Florida på onsdag benyttet Trump anledningen både til å fremheve sin egen innsats i siste debatt og til å kritisere Ryan og andre republikanske ledere for å ikke gi han tilstrekkelig støtte.
Trump advarte sine tilhengere at «this is the last time you’ll ever have a chance to save our country», viste til at tidligere presidentkandidat Pat Buchanan sa at hans debattopptreden mot Clinton var «the single greatest debate performance in the history of presidential politics», og impliserte at den manglende støtten fra det republikanske etablissementet i etterkant av debatten tilsier en konspirasjon mot han:
