Huset vedtok finansieringspakken. I siste time ble lovforslaget som hindrer en ny «shutdown» vedtatt i Huset med 219-206 stemmer. Dramaet i forkant av avstemningen avslører en ny dynamikk i Huset hvor venstrefløyen i motsetning til høyrefløyen opponerte mot finansieringspakken: «The 219-to-206 vote came with less than three hours to go until government funding expired. The result capped a long and acrimonious day in which House Democrats nearly upended the entire package, which was backed by President Obama. The showdown exposed some of the dynamics on Capitol Hill in which the most liberal Democrats replaced the most conservative Republicans as significant obstacles to passing difficult fiscal legislation.Passage of the legislation will be a victory for congressional Republicans, who were eager to wipe the slate clean of a host of unresolved matters before taking full control of Capitol Hill next year. The spending agreement also sets up what promises to be a heated three-month battle with Obama over the future of the nation’s immigration policy.»

But Thursday’s deadline drama offered no signal of party unity, only fresh reminders of the post-election divisions between a president who’s looking to govern during his last two years in office and a newly invigorated populist wing of the party, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).»
John O. Brennan innrømmer feil, i håp om å roe kritikken. I går ettermiddag, norsk tid, gikk CIA direktør John O. Han ønsker ikke å bruke ordet tortur selv og sier: “I will leave to others how they might want to label those activities. For me it was something that is regrettable.” Bakgrunnen for uttalelsen er reaksjonene verden over på avsløringene i rapporten. Det har også vært kritikk av Brennans håndtering. På spørsmål om han var med på å ta avgjørelser om å benytte metodene avslørt i rapporten sier han at han ikke var i rommet da avgjørelsene ble tatt.

Uttalelesen kom i et intervju med NBC NEWS hvor han forteller at han ikke lenger er den samme personen som da han stile til valg i 2012. Da tapte han nominasjonskampen i Det republikanske partiet, men nå er han overbevist om at han kan nå helt til Det hvite hus i 2016. På spørsmål om han har nok støtte svarer han: «The policy individuals that have said ‘listen, we want to come help you become even better prepared as we go forward’ is already the answer to that.»
Hva har potensielle presidentkandidater i 2016 å si om torturrapporten? Fint lite, skriver New York Times: «In 2002, not long after President George W. Bush named him the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey, Chris Christie emphatically and unexpectedly denounced torture as a means of gathering evidence. “I cannot believe, given the history of this country, that no matter what the threat to our country that we would forsake our protection of liberties to the extent that we would advocate torture as a way of getting evidence,” he said then, adding, “You have to be coolheaded in times of crisis to be able to not go too far.” But on Wednesday, Mr. Christie, the New Jersey governor and potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016, was hardly eager to revisit the torture issue. Among presumptive candidates in both parties — including Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jeb Bush — he had company in his reticence.

Anne Compton, ABC News-korrespondent i Det hvite hus gjennom førti år, gikk nylig av med pensjon. The staff videographer even produces a White House newscast, “West Wing Week,” each Friday morning.
